What makes Oxford such a good place to work in AI?
The centrality of Oxford as a hub of intellectual leadership ensures that it is consistently in active communication with the worlds of governments, international institutions, the private sector, and civil society. Given how quickly the world of AI is moving, this makes Oxford an excellent place to work on AI issues by ensuring that we always have our fingers on the pulse, and have routes to create real-world impact with our research.
What is the biggest opportunity or challenge in AI?
The world of AI is dominated by multinational technology companies who are undoubtedly the leading actors developing and deploying the technology, and thus are at the forefront of making decisions about what impact the technology will have on the world. This poses both a challenge and an opportunity. The challenge arises in that traditional tools of governance – namely regulation, legislation, and state-led international institutions – are poorly equipped to govern a technology that is, to some extent, beyond their control. However, there is also an opportunity for a new form of governance, led by private actors, to emerge that is more aligned with the pace of development and better informed by technical insights. AI governance could thus provide an opportunity for private firms to realign their incentives for the common benefit of humanity.
