My research focuses on how to improve the quality of drinking water in low income settings, through considering the interplay of science, behaviour and policy.
Why is Oxford a good place to work in research related to environmental challenges?
At Oxford we have had a unique opportunity to develop long-term partnerships to research the challenge of water security and opportunities to improve how water is managed by governments, donors, industry and communities.
What is the biggest environmental challenge facing the planet right now?
Water security is a major challenge as the population grows and as countries develop. How one person uses water – how much they use and what condition they leave it in – has a big impact on the health and livelihoods of people downstream. As populations grow, and climate change makes water availability less reliable, there is an increasing need to actively manage who gets water, how much, and how it is treated.
Despite the challenges, are you optimistic about our future?
Watching people eagerly learn new information and tools, and seeing them apply it to make a difference, is very rewarding, and it makes me optimistic about the future.
