What makes Oxford such a good place to work in AI?
Oxford has a vibrant interdisciplinary community of scholars exploring the implications of machine learning and other AI-related technologies for government and society. For example, experts within the CTGA’s AI research dimension are using machine learning tools to measure and predict the impact of UK legislation on political and economic affairs. These and other similar projects place Oxford at the forefront of research exploring the intersection of politics and emerging AI technologies. In short, Oxford is leading the way in taking the study of politics firmly into the 21st century.
What is the biggest opportunity or challenge in AI?
From a cybersecurity perspective, machine learning technologies may have an important – possibly a decisive – effect on the defence-offence balance. Presently, the offence enjoys a significant advantage: it is very difficult to thwart sophisticated offensive cyber operations. New ML tools, however, could improve the identification and neutralisation of advanced malware within vital computer infrastructures. Conversely, the technologies could also lead to the production of smarter self-adaptive malware, thereby aiding the offence. The implications of ML technologies for the offence-defence balance of cyberspace will be very important for security analysis and planning.
