Paul Jarvis is Professor of Plant Cell Biology, Department of Plant Sciences.

Main area(s) of interest/expertise

Our research seeks to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying the biogenesis and operation of chloroplasts in plants (these are the organelles responsible for photosynthesis), including their roles in plant responses to the environment.

Why is Oxford a good place to work in research related to environmental challenges?

At Oxford we have one of the few remaining dedicated plant science departments in the country, and so there is an outstanding critical mass of expertise in plant biology here. Not only that, there are exceptional possibilities for interdisciplinary collaboration with researchers in other departments across the science area.

What is the biggest environmental challenge facing the planet right now?

Climate change.

Despite the challenges, are you optimistic about our future?

Yes, it is important to remain optimistic.
