Dr. Rebecca Inglis is an intensive care doctor researching ways to improve the care of critically ill patients in low resource settings. She has spent the past 3 years doing a DPhil in Laos with the Oxford Tropical Medicine Network.
What is your main area(s) of interest/expertise?
I am interested in using the science of behaviour change to improve the quality of care that patients receive. I have used this approach to develop and evaluate The Essential Critical Care Course, a training intervention aimed at ICU nurses and doctors.
What are you working on right now?
I am currently working with the WHO and the Laos Ministry of Health to support the COVID-19 emergency response. I have been able to use the methodology I developed during my DPhil to design a COVID-19 training course that has been rolled out to every province in the country. I use low cost simulation and practical, interactive teaching techniques which have proven popular and effective.
Why is Oxford a good place to work in this field of research?
The University has been very supportive in allowing me to temporarily suspend my DPhil and redirect my efforts towards COVID-19. I have been able to directly translate my pre-COVID research findings to support the COVID response in Laos and further afield.
